waste not, want not…

I’m a real stickler for avoiding waste.  I try not to waste paper, energy, water, soap, shampoo, whatever.  Along those same lines (and very similar to my chicken explosion story last week), I tend not to waste food.  I don’t throw away left overs.  I take them to work for lunch or eat them for dinner later in the day.  The idea of putting half of something in the trash just drives me insane.  Perhaps it’s because I’m cheap, but I prefer to think that it’s because I’m ecologically & morally conscious.  Yes, morally conscious.  Wasting food seems to defy what I consider moral and good.  I’d rather take my left overs and offer them to a homeless person (yeah, I’d do it.  And no, I don’t find it offensive.) than trash it.

However, I’m beginning to wonder, what the hell is wrong with me? Am I wrong?  Should I have thrown my Mexican leftovers last night rather than saving them for lunch today?  After the microwave debacle, I’m inclined to say yes.  Taco Salads are NOT meant to be reheated.  This may seem obvious to most, as they contain lettuce & other “best-served-cold” items (sour cream, guac, etc.).  Hell, the name even says “SALAD!” So, defying common sense, I heated my taco salad up moments ago, anticipating a tasty treat.  Um… needless to say, it was really more like a brown lump contained in something like a greasy, wet, paper bag.  Then… then there’s my cheese dip.  Cheese dip, if heated for more than 3.76 seconds without stirring, will bubble up into a hot, steamy volcano of dairy goodness.  I mean, it’s all good, right? Except that it flows over the edges of the bowl and covers the glass plate in the microwave.  (which you have to clean up immediately because you’re at work and leaving it would be so wrong.)

But at the end of it, I’m still eating my brown lump filled paper bag and scraping the milimeter of cheesy deliciousness out of the bowl.  And dammit, I’d do it all over again.
