Holly Says “No!”

Work Stuff, boo-hoo No Comments »

It’s no secret that I have a problem saying “No” to people. I help out when I don’t have to at work, I’m frequently “volunteered” for committees and clubs I do not want to join, I go places I don’t want to go & listen to music I don’t want to listen to.  But today, my friends, I took a step in a positive direction by saying “NEGATIVE” to a silly request.

I guess the back story is somewhat necessary.  In short, I’m acquaintances with someone who very frequently asks for me to help them out with work that shouldn’t be too difficult or time consuming to be completed by one person in a reasonable (i.e.: 8 hour day) amount of time.  I always oblige and lend a hand, even if it’s something that I detest (read: filing.  I’m sure you’d already guessed this was work related.).  So, a few days ago I asked for help on a simple project.  This is, I believe, the very first time I’ve ever asked for assistance from this person.  EVER… and you know what they said? “Umm… no.  Good luck with that.”  Rude, right?

Skip ahead to today.  Said acquaintance comes to my door while I am at lunch -my blinds are closed, my door is shut & locked- and asks me for a favor! One that could have EASILY been completed without A) interrupting my lunch or B) my help what so ever. You know what I did?! Well, yeah, you do… I said NO and it was wonderful! :D

I guess the moral of my little rant is that people really need to stand up for themselves more often.  That and people need to know that they will get exactly what they give.  Karma’s a bitch.

Drinking Liberally!

Around Athens, Politics No Comments »

I’m back from Mexico and busier than ever! As of late, one of the things keeping me and Patrick busy is the new Athens Chapter of the national organization Drinking Liberally.  In short Drinking Liberally is:

An informal, inclusive progressive social group. Raise your spirits
while you raise your glass, and share ideas while you share a pitcher.
Drinking Liberally gives like-minded, left-leaning individuals a place
to talk politics. You don’t need to be a policy expert and this isn’t a
book club - just come and learn from peers, trade jokes, vent
frustration and hang out in an environment where it’s not taboo to talk
politics.Bars are democratic spaces - you talk to strangers, you share booths,
you feel the bond of common ground. Bring democratic discourse to your
local democratic space - build democracy one drink at a time.

Our chapter has recently changed its meeting venue from The Max Canada. Starting on Friday, July 18, 2008 we will be meeting at Little Kings Shuffle Club. We will continue meeting every first and third Friday of the month there.  The meeting time has also changed from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm.  We hope that this change will make the meetings a bit more accessible and allow more of you to join us at DL!

On a side note, the reason we are changing venues was very eloquently described by Patrick on his blog. I second his suggestion to the bar tender on Wednesday afternoons at The Max Canada to “Go Fuck Yourself.” (The opinions contained herein, as well as on Patrick’s blog post which is linked above, are personal opinions and in no way reflect any sort of official communication either on behalf of Drinking Liberally, Athens Chapter nor on behalf of the national Drinking Liberally organization.)
