It's pretty much true, isn't it?

(Does that make it less funny?)

'Drugs Now Legal If User Is Employed

March 27, 2002 | Issue 38•11

WASHINGTON, DC—Seeking to "narrow the focus of the drug war to the true enemy," Congress passed a bill legalizing drug use for the gainfully employed Monday.

The Drug War

"Stockbrokers, lawyers, English professors... you're not the problem here," said DEA Administrator Asa Hutchinson at a White House press conference. "If you are paying taxes and keeping your yard tidy, we're not going to hassle you if you come home from a hard day of work and want to enjoy a little pot or blow. But if, on the other hand, you're one of these lazy, shiftless types hanging out on the street all day looking for your next high, we're coming after you." ...'

a break, or is it?

Finished the semester's schoolwork last Saturday morning.

Got all As, a couple I'm not sure if I totally deserved, but I'll take 'em all the same.

Having Christmas at our house which means we have to get this mess in order. Plus I continue putting in shifts at my telecrap job.

After the holiday but before the semester begins there's plenty of studying I'd like to do. I started reading this history book and it'd be cool to finish it before the semester begins. Also, there's a general Linguistics text I started but didn't finish last summer that I would like to return to and finish. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I need to polish up my Italian a little bit. I'm taking a mid-level Italian class to meet the third language requirement for my degree program. (I could alternately take a written test which I wouldn't pass without an equal or greater amount of study.)

I must say that Holly is the best gift wrapper ever!

library questions

1. Why does this asshole just two PCs to my right think it's cool to chat on his cell phone in a loud voice IN THE LIBRARY?

2. How fucking long does it take to clean the goddamn mens restroom that is about 15 feet away from me and taunts me and my full bladder IN THE LIBRARY?

almost there

As far as the heavy academic lifting is concerned anyway. Turned in two final papers yesterday. Have a final exam today. Should be studying now but am slacking off.

getting closer

I'd say I am about half done with the end-of-semester tasks. The list that follows actually has more left to do than what is done, but it really feels like more is done than that...

What's done:
My translation projects. (Not for school but needed to get out of the way in order to be able to do school (as well as to get paid))
My phonetics/phonology transcription project and final paper.
My Methods class.
What's left:
Last day of class (tomorrow).
Still have to get my teaching portfolio put together to show it tomorrow.
Have to do my final paper for applied linguistics.
Have to write a paper for Methods.
(both of those due next Monday)
Have a final exam in phonetics/phonology next Tuesday.
Have to meet during final exam appointment for applied linguistics next week Thursday morning but thank god, no exam. We are just going to chill and talk about our final paper.
Have to give Spanish 1001 final exam next week Thursday night.
Have to give make up Spanish 1001 exam next week Friday morning. (pain in the ass).

Then it'll all be over. Man It's been like ten years since I've been in school and it's my first time in grad school. Now I remember why people hate school. It's still better than my old day job though. It's still better than the "real world." (As the quotation marks imply, I object to some of the implications of that expression.)

Matt Peters-- I have been very interested by your most recent blog entries. Sorry I haven't commented but I will get in touch with you after the semester's over.

making progress

Little by little but not so little as to be insignificant. Will miss Garbage Island show (quite willingly) at the 40 Watt this Friday because of all this schoolwork. Believe it or fucking not. Of course, if I weren't so adult or had rich relatives or something like that and didn't have to work a second job to help maintain this sweet and high standard of living we've got going then I could probably squeeze it in my busy schedule. I do intend on seeing them the next chance I get though.

I must bathe now.
